Thank You to Our D-Day Soldiers, Thanks Melvin Mora

Sixty-Five years ago today, the Allies came ashore at Normandy France, to liberate the European Continent of Hitler’s Nazi tyranny. Codenamed SWORD, JUNO OMAHA, and GOLD, the beaches were swarmed with U.S., British, and Canadian forces all advancing forward against Hitler’s Fortress Europe.

Thank you to all the soldiers who lost their lives fighting to rid the world of Hitler. Thank you to all the families who lost their loved ones when the final sacrifice was given in the name of Liberty, and Freedom.

On the 6oth anniversary of D-Day, five years ago today, I remember waking up at 7a.m. to the sound of mortars exploding around the camp. I was in Iraq, Log Base Seitz.

Two guys in my company had gotten open early on that Sunday morning to hit the showers, so they could beat the rush. They figured if they went then, before everyone else was up, there would be no lines to use the facilities.

The facilities, were little trailers with rows of commodes on the left side, showers and sinks on the right. My friend Mel had just started brushing his teeth, when a mortar came through the top of the trailer and exploded in the sink next to him. Sgt Hernandez was wounded severely and would be in rehab for quite sometime later. My friend Melvin Mora, was lost.

Army Sgt. Melvin Y. Mora

27, of Columbia, Mo.; assigned to the 245th Maintenance Company, Army Reserve, St. Louis, Mo.; killed June 6, 2004 when his camp was hit by a mortar attack on Camp Seitz, Iraq.

My Friend.

He was studying Astronomy working on his Master’s Degree. He wanted to learn Astronomy so that he could fulfill a dream to put a television show on The Discovery Channel which helped explain Astronomy in layman’s terms. To teach the novice. He joined the Army to learn how to be a better presenter, to learn the English language better, and to help him pay to finish school.

I bet he has learned a lot about Astronomy in the last 5 years, with the Creator of the Universe as his tutor.

Thank you Mel for your sacrifice. We salute you brother, and miss you.
